In light of recent policy developments and debates in Europe, Goethe-Institut Brussels together with DAAD Brussels jointly invited policy makers and stakeholders to engage in stimulating exchanges about good practives, key barriers and possible solutions to overcome pressing challenges in cross-border mobility of foreign language teachers in Europe.

Workshop “Facilitating European Mobility of Foreign Language Teachers”

In light of significant teacher shortages across Europe, including for language teachers in secondary schools, there is a need to reflect about innovative solutions to enhance the attractiveness of the teacher profession and to facilitate international mobility of teachers. Innovative projects and initiatives have been developed to address obstacles and identify possible solutions to pave the way for streamlining teacher mobility in Europe. The EU calls for teacher mobility to become a common feature of teachers’ training and in their career, which is one of the key drivers towards the achievement of the European Education Area by 2025 and has been advocated by the Council Recommendation “Europe on the Move” adopted by the Council in May 2024. National scholarship programmes such as Lehramt.International and SCHULWÄRTS! are supporting prospective teachers undertaking an internship in a school abroad and are essential elements of the internationalisation of higher education institutions and schools.

The workshop, which took place on 3 June 2024 Brussels, aimed at:

  • Identifying recent EU policy developments and initiatives
  • Presenting the outcomes of innovative programmes, projects and initiatives
  • Igniting an interactive dialogue among participants about the main barriers, possible solutions and stakeholders needed to move forward to facilitate international teacher mobility in Europe.
